Queen Latifah
Dana Elaine Owens, better than Queen Latifah the US, is an actress and rapper. Her performance as a singer, music, film and TV artist has won the actress the distinction of two Screen Actors Guild Awards and two Image Awards. She also was awarded an Grammy Award and six other Grammy nominations. Queen Latifah is the daughter of a Newark New Jersey schoolteacher and an Newark New Jersey police officer Lancelot Owens Senior, was born and raised within Newark New Jersey. The couple divorced at the age of Latifah was 10 years old. Latifah went to Catholic school and was educated at Newark New Jersey. She went to the Baptist church. In her early twenties, her cousin gave her the stage name Latifah, which means tender and gentle in Arabic. Always tall, the 5'10 tall Latifah was a power forward on the basketball team at her high school. The song she performed was "Home" from The Wiz in the course of a show in her high school. Latifah started to beatbox for the rap group Ladies Fresh. Latifah was member of the Flavor Unit - a group of rappers who were gathered around the producer, DJ Mark the 45 King. Mark James aka the 45 King, made a recording of Queen Latifah's Princess of the Posse rap. The recording was sent to Yo! MTV Raps Fab 5 Freddy. Dante Ross of Tommy Boy Music, who worked for Latifah during that time was awed by her song. The song was released in 1988. Wrath of My Madness as Latifah's first single.
